What Type of Cherries are Best For Milkshakes?
For this recipe, we are using a jar of maraschino cherries. You can buy them in your local grocery store all year round, they are perfectly sweet every time, and you don't have to pit them.
If cherries are in season when you are making this milkshake, feel free to use those. Make sure to wash and pit each cherry before adding it to the milkshake. You'll want 1 cup of pitted and cleaned cherries.
Ingredients to Gather
- Vanilla ice cream. It might seem strange to have vanilla ice cream in a chocolate milkshake, but the vanilla ice cream is a great base for the milkshake. You can then add all the chocolate syrup you want and you'll get a much more intense chocolate taste than you would if you used chocolate ice cream.
- Maraschino cherries. You'll want one 10 ounce jar. Keep the juice, but make sure the stems are removed.
- Chocolate syrup. Your favorite brand. You can often find chocolate syrup in the baking aisle of your local grocery store. The chocoholic in my loves this chocolate smoothie along with this milkshake!

Lynn's Tip! For an extra indulgent treat, top your milkshake with whipped cream and a drizzle of chocolate syrup. Trust me, it's worth it!
How to Thicken the Milkshake
If you like a really thick milkshake, add more ice cream to the blender and use less maraschino cherry juice. You can also add in a handful of ice cubes to thicken it as well.
For a thinner milkshake, add in all the maraschino cherry juice plus ¼ cup of milk (your favorite variety). This was make a thinner milkshake that might be easier for kids to enjoy.
