Give my Nutella frozen hot chocolate a try too! I think you'll love it!
I absolutely love the combination of vanilla and crunchy chocolate chips, don’t you? CONFESSION TIME! You can often find me sneaking a few chocolate chips into my ice cream bowl for that extra chocolatey crunch!
So, why not take it up a notch and turn it into a cold, refreshing milkshake? Plus, it only takes a handful of ingredients. You could whip this up every day if you wanted!
In my pantry, you can always have a stash of chocolate chips. My kids and I love baking cookies, and those chocolate chips are a staple in our house. When we’re not baking, we’re finding new ways to use them, like in this milkshake.
The key to this milkshake is to use mini chocolate chips. They blend well and are easier to blend, so they won't all sink to the bottom, but more on that later!
Can You Add Chocolate Chips to a Milkshake?
Yes! Chocolate chips are added to this milkshake to add some texture and chocolatey flavor. The blender does that hard work of crushing the chocolate chips into small pieces. We aren't using chocolate chip ice cream because you don't get enough chocolate chips in a scoop of chocolate chip ice cream. This milkshake is loaded with chocolate chips!
Ingredients to Gather
- Vanilla ice cream. This is the base of our milkshake. You can use your favorite brand and variety of vanilla ice cream. Vanilla milkshake is the base to so many milkshakes, just like in my frozen white hot chocolate.
- Milk. Whole milk helps make this milkshake creamy. You can use whatever milk you have in your refrigerator though.
- Chocolate chips. Use your favorite brand. Every store brand has their own type of chocolate chips, and all will work in this milkshake.

- Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Milkshake. Blend in a spoonful of peanut butter. Everyone loves peanut butter!
- Oreo Chocolate Chip Milkshake. Add a few Oreo cookies to the blender for a cookies-and-cream variation.
- Double Chocolate Chip Milkshake. Use chocolate ice cream instead of vanilla for the chocolate lover in your life!
- Protein-Packed Chocolate Chip Milkshake. Add a scoop of your favorite protein powder for a protein boost.
- Vegan Chocolate Chip Milkshake. Use almond or soy milk and dairy-free chocolate chips and ice cream for a vegan-friendly option.
- Make it boozy! Add a splash of your favorite liqueur, like Baileys or Kahlúa, for an adult version. Just be sure to make a nonalcoholic batch for the kids!
How To Make a Chocolate Chip Milkshake
Add all the ingredients to the blender and blend until the desired consistency is reached. Garnish the milkshake with homemade whipped cream (if you have it), some more chocolate chips, and a drizzle of chocolate syrup.
Tips and Tricks
- We are using vanilla ice cream instead of chocolate chip ice cream because we can get more chocolate chips in the milkshake by adding them separately.
- To make the milkshake thinner, add more milk. For a thicker shake, add less milk or include ice cubes.
- Mini chocolate chips blend more easily, but if you’re using regular-sized chips, blend a bit longer to ensure they’re well incorporated. The longer you blend the milkshake the less likely it is that the chocolate chips will sink to the bottom.
Make Ahead Tips
Like all milkshakes, milkshakes are best enjoyed immediately after blending to maintain their creamy texture.
If you need to prepare them in advance, you can freeze the milkshake in an airtight container or popsicle molds. Just give it a quick blend before serving if it’s been frozen.
Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, you can make a milkshake without ice cream by using frozen bananas or ice cubes as a base. Blend them with milk and chocolate chips. Add more milk based on how thin or thick you like the milkshake.
