How To Pick a Ripe Avocado
Picking the perfect avocado is key to making great guacamole. Here’s what to look for:
- Gently squeeze the avocado. It should feel slightly soft but not mushy.
- Check the stem. Flick off the small stem at the top. If it comes off easily and the color underneath is green, the avocado is ripe. If it’s brown or stubborn, it may be overripe or underripe.
- Skin color. Darker skin generally means a riper avocado. Lighter green avocados usually need a few days to ripen.
Ingredients to Make 4 Ingredient Guacamole

- Avocado. You'll want some ripe avocados. If they are not ripe enough, place them in a brown bag with a banana and keep them on the counter for a few hours. This will ripen the avocados quickly.
- Onions. We usually use red onions, but yellow onions work great too if that's what you have on hand.
- Lime juice. Fresh lime juice is best.

How To Make 4 Ingredient Guacamole
Step 1: Start by cutting the avocados in half, removing the pit, and scooping the flesh into a bowl. Use a fork to mash the avocado. If you like it chunky, don't mash it too much. If you like it smooth, mash it more.
Step 2: Squeeze the juice of one lime over the mashed avocado. This adds flavor and helps keep the guacamole fresh and green.

Step 3: Finely chop one small onion and stir it into the avocado mixture.
Step 4: Add salt to taste. Start with a pinch and adjust to your taste.

Lynn's Tip!
Start with a little bit of salt and then add more. Guacamole tends to need a lot of salt, so be generous!
What To Serve with Guacamole
There are so many ways you can enjoy this delicious guacamole!
- Tortilla chips
- Tacos or burritos
- Grilled chicken or steak. You can top them with some creamy taco dip too!
- As a spread for sandwiches
- On top of scrambled eggs for breakfast, which is one of my favorite ways to enjoy it!
Storage Instructions
You can make guacamole ahead of time and just keep it in the refrigerator in an airtight container until you are ready to enjoy it. You might want to add a little lime juice to the top of the guacamole to prevent it from going brown.
If you have any leftovers (which rarely happens in our house), you can store guacamole in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days. For best results, press a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole before sealing the container. This helps prevent it from turning brown.
