What is a Chocolate Smoothie Made of?
This chocolate smoothie is kind of like drinking a chocolate milkshake, without the ice cream. It's made with just a few simple ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen.
- Greek yogurt. This adds protein to the smoothie but also makes it really creamy. I like adding vanilla Greek yogurt but your favorite flavor would work. To make this smoothie lower in sugar, use plain Greek yogurt.
- Milk. Your favorite variety. Nondairy milk or dairy milk will work.
- Unsweetened cocoa powder. This is a chocolate smoothie after all!
- Maple syrup. Cocoa powder can be quite bitter, so the maple syrup helps sweeten this smoothie.
- Ice cubes. To make it cold and frosty.

Substitutions and Variations
- Change the milk. I love using whole milk in smoothies because it gives it a milkshake like feel, but if you prefer, feel free to use oat milk, soy milk, almond milk, or whatever milk you have on hand.
- Add some greens. Greens are so popular in smoothies, especially for kids. You can add a handful of spinach or kale to this smoothie and it won't effect the taste at all. Just make sure you are using a high powered blender.
- Add more protein. Add a scoop of your favorite chocolate protein powder for even more protein. You can also increase the amount of Greek yogurt in this recipe if you would like.
- Add some fruit. Frozen bananas or frozen strawberries go really well with chocolate.
- Add some mix ins. Add a tablespoon of chia seeds, flax meal, or hemp seeds to make this smoothie more filling and even more satisfying.
How To Make a Chocolate Smoothie
In a high speed blender, add all the ingredients. Blend for 1-2 minutes until the smoothie is the desired consistency. Serve with whipped cream and a drizzle of chocolate syrup if you would like.

- To make this smoothie thicker, add more ice cubes. To make it thinner, add more milk.
- This will make one large smoothie or two smaller smoothies. Feel free to double or triple this recipe for meal prep or if you are serving a crowd. Just make sure your blender is big enough.
- This recipe is great for popsicles too! In the hot Summer, a chocolate popsicle is a great treat for kids and adults! Pour the smoothie into your favorite popsicle mold and freeze for at least 4 hours.
- A chocolate smoothie is best blended and then enjoyed immediately. You can make it ahead of time, you just have to keep it in the refrigerator and then add it back to the blender with a little more ice to refresh it. The smoothie will separate as it sits in the refrigerator.
