Is there anything better than an icy cold honeydew melon on a hot Summer day? What about if you add that delicious honeydew to a smoothie! You won't go back to boring smoothies after you try this sweet smoothie!
We only recently started liking honeydew. My family has been a big fan of cantaloupe for as long as I can remember, but honeydew was never on my radar. Then I tried it in a smoothie and this might be my new favorite smoothie! If you love this smoothie, you have to try my mango pineapple smoothie and a creamy mango kale smoothie! All are great choices for hot Summer days!
Ingredients to Gather
- Honeydew Melon. The honeydew melon is the smooth green melon that you can easily find in the grocery store once Summer comes around. The great thing about a honeydew melon is that you can buy one at the grocery store and then let it ripen on the counter. It has a pretty long shelf life!
- Honey. This is especially important if the honeydew is not super sweet. Taste the honeydew melon before you add it to the smoothie so you know whether you need more or less honey in the smoothie.
- Vanilla Greek Yogurt. This increases the protein of the smoothie to make it a little more filling, but if also helps make the smoothie creamy. I love adding Greek yogurt to all my smoothies, just like in my grape smoothie.
- Ice cubes. To make the smoothie nice and cold.

Substitutions and Variations
- Change the flavor of Greek yogurt. Instead of vanilla, feel free to add plain or your favorite flavor of Greek yogurt.
- Banana. Adding banana to smoothies is classic! Just like my coffee and banana breakfast smoothie, a banana adds natural sweetness and thickens the smoothie.
- Spinach or Kale. Adds lots of good stuff without altering the flavor much. Make sure you use a high speed blender so the leaves are well distributed throughout the smoothie.
- Coconut water or Coconut milk. Adds a tropical flavor and extra hydration.
- Mint leaves. Mint adds freshness and adds a refreshing twist. In the Summer mint grows wild, and I try to put it in as many recipes as I can.
- Lime or lemon juice. Adds brightness and balances the sweetness of the honeydew.
- Ginger. Adds a spicy kick to your smoothie.
- Chia seeds, Hemp seeds, or Flaxseeds: Adds fiber and healthy fats to the smoothie.
How To Make a Honeydew Smoothie
Step 1: Cut the honeydew, remove the seeds, remove the peel. Add the chunks of honeydew to the blender.
Step 2: Place the Greek yogurt into the blender.
Step 3: Add the honey to the blender. Instead of honey, you can use maple syrup or agave syrup.
Step 4: Add the ice cubes to the blender and blend until the desired consistency is reached.
Tips and Tricks
- When selecting a ripe honeydew, look for a fruit that feels heavy for its size and has a creamy yellow color on the rind with a slightly waxy texture. Additionally, give it a gentle press near the stem end - if it gives slightly and has a sweet aroma, it's a ripe honeydew!
- Make these into popsicles! I love making my smoothies into popsicles, especially for my kids. Pour the smoothie into your favorite popsicle mold and freeze them for at least 4 hours. Then take the popsicles out of the mold and enjoy!
- Smoothies are best blended and then enjoyed. If you do need to make this smoothie ahead of time, blend it and pour it into a mason jar. Place it in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. When you are ready to enjoy it, shake the smoothie as it will separate a little bit. You can also pour the smoothie back into a blender with a little ice and blend it well.
- Keep the rest of the leftover honeydew in an airtight container in the refrigerator to enjoy throughout the week as a snack or to make another smoothie later.
Honeydew Smoothie FAQs
Yes! Cut the honeydew, remove the seeds and the peel. Place the chunks of honeydew on a baking sheet and place it in the freezer for at least 4 hours or until they are frozen solid. Then place the chunks in a Ziploc bag and use the chunks as you need them.
To thicken the smoothie, add more ice cubes. To make the smoothie thinner, add some coconut water.
Honeydew melon is full of liquid, so as it blends it will give off a lot of liquid. To keep this smoothie thick, we don't need to add more liquid.
