Confession time, I am OBSESSED with coffee. I love all types of coffee! Iced coffee, I need it! Hot coffee, yes please! Coffee smoothie? Most definitely! When I am in a rush or don't have time to make a hot breakfast, I like to make this smoothie to get my coffee and my breakfast all in one!
This recipe is made with instant coffee to make it even easier! Grab your favorite brand of instant coffee and make this smoothie on repeat all week along with my chocolate smoothie!
Are Coffee and Banana Good in a Smoothie?
Yes! While it might seem a little crazy to put banana and smoothie together, you have to think about it this way. Overripe bananas are super sweet and coffee is quite bitter. Add some yogurt and you've got a thick and creamy cup of coffee. The bananas are your sugar, the instant coffee is your caffeine, and the yogurt is your milk. It's a must make!
Ingredients to Gather
- Instant Coffee. Use your favorite brand.
- Bananas. You want the bananas to be brown and spotty. Those bananas are the sweetness and will help add the sweetness to your smoothie. You can use fresh or frozen bananas.
- Yogurt. Vanilla yogurt helps lighten the smoothie while also add protein to the smoothie. You can use coffee yogurt if you prefer or plain yogurt would be delicious too.
- Milk. Use your favorite milk here, what you would use in your morning coffee. I like whole milk or almond milk, just depending on what I have in my house.

What Type of Coffee Is Best to Use?
Instant coffee is so easy to use and can be kept in your pantry. That way whenever you want to make this recipe, you can easily add it into the smoothie. If you don't like instant coffee or don't have any on hand, here are some other variations that you could use. Use ¼ to ½ cup of liquid coffee in place of 1 tablespoon of instant coffee.
- Cold Brew Coffee: Cold brew coffee is smooth, less acidic, and has a naturally sweet flavor profile. Its mellowness pairs well with the creamy texture of the smoothie.
- Espresso: If you prefer a stronger coffee flavor, espresso can be a good choice. You may need some more sugar if you use espresso.
- Brewed Coffee: A regular brewed coffee can work well too, especially if you prefer a milder coffee flavor. A medium roast would work well to balance the flavors without overpowering the smoothie.
- Flavored Coffee: If you're feeling adventurous, you can experiment with flavored coffee like vanilla or hazelnut to add an extra layer of flavor to your smoothie.
Substitutions and Variations
- Use frozen bananas! You won't need ice cubes if you use frozen bananas and therefore the smoothie won't be watered down as much.
- Make it a mocha! Add a tablespoon of cocoa powder or some semi-sweet chocolate chips to the smoothie.
- Make it decaf! Use a tablespoon of instant decaf coffee.
- Use your morning coffee! If you don't have instant coffee, use ¼ cup of your morning coffee that is cooled so it doesn't warm up the smoothie.
- Add some greens! Just like in my mango kale smoothie, add some kale or spinach. Make sure you are using a high speed blender. You don't want chunks of kale or spinach in your smoothie, it won't be too pleasant.
- Add a scoop of protein powder! To make this an even more filling smoothie, add protein to the smoothie. Your favorite flavor will work great in this recipe.
- Add some mix ins! Add a scoop of chia seeds, flax seeds, or hemp seeds for even more nutrition.

Smoothies are great frozen though! Pour the smoothie into ice cube trays and let it freeze. When you would like to enjoy the smoothie, place the ice cubes into a blender with a little milk and blend until it's the consistency you desire.
