How to Make the Perfect Smoothie Recipe
Making a smoothie is incredibly simple, no need to overcomplicate it. By keeping these things in mind, you'll become a smoothie pro in no time!
Choose Your Base:
The base of your smoothie is what gives it its liquid consistency. Here are some ideas for liquids to add to your smoothie.
- Milk. Dairy or plant-based (like strawberry smoothie with almond milk, soy milk, or oat milk)
- Juice. For a fruitier flavor. Orange juice is really common in smoothies.
- Water or Coconut Water. A lighter option, just make sure you have lots of other heavier ingredients to add tons of flavor to the smoothie.
Pick Your Fruits and Vegetables:
Fruits and vegetables are the stars of any smoothie. Popular choices include:
- Fruits: Bananas, berries, mangoes, pineapples, apples, and peaches.
- Vegetables: Spinach, kale (like a mango kale smoothie), carrots, and cucumbers.
Add a Protein if you'd like:
Adding protein to your smoothie helps keep you full and bulks up your smoothie. Here are some common options.
- Protein Powder. Whey, soy, or pea protein
- Greek Yogurt. A thick, creamy option. Use plain or your favorite flavor.
- Nuts or Nut Butters. Almonds, peanut butter, or sunflower seed butter
Toss in Some Extras:
Extras can add flavor, texture, or additional health benefits. Try:
- Seeds. Chia (they aren't just for chia seed puddings!), flax, or hemp seeds
- Sweeteners. Honey, maple syrup, or dates
- Spices. Cinnamon, vanilla extract, or ginger
Blend Until Smooth:
Combine all your ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. If the consistency is too thick, add more liquid. If it's too thin, add more fruit or ice.
How To Properly Store a Smoothie
Sometimes you might want to prepare your smoothies ahead of time. They are great to meal prep! Here’s how to make smoothies ahead of time:
If you're planning to drink your smoothie within 24 hours, store it in an airtight container in the fridge. I like a mason jar with a tight lid. Give it a good shake or stir before drinking, as some ingredients may separate.
For longer storage, freeze your smoothie in an airtight container or ice cube trays. When you’re ready to enjoy it, let it thaw in the fridge or blend the frozen cubes with a bit of liquid.
You can make pre-made smoothie packs too! Assemble all the ingredients (except the liquid) in a freezer-safe bag and store them in the freezer. When you’re ready to make your smoothie, just add the contents to your blender with your chosen liquid and blend.
Smoothie Frequently Asked Questions
Yes! You can use a food processor to make a smoothie. Just be careful pouring the smoothie as it doesn't have a great spout for pouring. An immersion blender is also a great option.
Absolutely! Frozen produce works great in smoothies and often contains more nutrients since it's frozen at peak ripeness. I love using frozen bananas and frozen strawberries in my smoothies.
To thicken your smoothie, add more frozen fruits, yogurt, or ice cubes. This is especially important if you are using your smoothie to make a smoothie bowl.
