During berry season, we always have a ton of berries in the house! I love making strawberry almond milk smoothies and banana mixed berry smoothies too! After we go strawberry picking every Summer, we always have leftover berries. Some strawberries are frozen, while a lot of others get made into smoothies.
How do you feel about blackberries? I love them! They are really tart, so they are a great contrast to the sweet strawberries and the sweet honey. They make this smoothie a really well rounded treat!
Are Strawberries and Blackberries a Good Smoothie Combination?
Yes! It's a great smoothie combination! The sweet, fresh strawberries are a great contrast to the tart blackberries. Plus, berries are super healthy and great to add into anyone's diet! I am always trying to get my kids to eat berries. I put them in all the smoothies, recipes, and whenever else I can sneak them in.
Ingredients to Gather
- Berries. We'll be using both strawberries and blackberries, after all this is a strawberry blackberry smoothie! Fresh berries or frozen berries will both work. If you are using fresh berries, add a cup of ice cubes to the blender to make the smoothie cold and icy.
- Yogurt. Yogurt will add protein as well as creaminess to the smoothie. You can use vanilla Greek yogurt, plain yogurt, or even your favorite berry yogurt.
- Milk. Use your favorite milk here. You can use almond milk, whole milk, 2% milk, soy milk, or whatever your favorite milk is. If you don't want to use milk, use orange juice or coconut water instead.
- Honey. Berries can be quite tart, so the honey will help contrast the tartness with the sweetness of the honey.

Substitutions and Variations
- Add more fruit! You can add one ripe banana, a peach, a mango, or some pineapple to this smoothie too.
- Add more protein! Add a scoop of your favorite protein powder. A lot of times you can find vanilla protein powder or even a berry protein powder.
- Add some greens! I love adding kale or spinach to smoothies. Just make sure that you are using a high powered blender. The blender needs to cut the spinach and kale leaves really well so it doesn't taste like you are drinking a salad. No one wants that!
- Add some seeds! Chia seeds are added a lot these days to smoothies. You can also add hemp seeds or flaxseeds too.
- Change the sweetener! Use maple syrup instead of honey. Agave syrup would also be a great choice, or you can leave it out completely if you prefer a more tart smoothie.
How To Make Blackberry Strawberry Smoothie
Step 1: Wash the strawberries and blackberries. Cut them into pieces and add them to the high powered blender.
Step 2: Spoon the yogurt into the blender.
Step 3: Add the honey and almond milk to the blender. Add in a handful of ice cubes if you are using fresh berries. Cover the blender.
Step 4: Blend on high for 1-2 minutes until the smoothie is the consistency you desire.
Lynn's Tip! This recipe makes one large smoothie or two small smoothies. You can easily double or triple this recipe if you are feeding a crowd of people.
Tips and Tricks
- If you are using all fresh berries, add a handful of ice cubes to make the smoothie colder and thicker.
- For a thinner smoothie, add more milk. For a thicker smoothie, add more ice cubes. You can also add a banana or ½ cup of old fashioned oats to make the smoothie thicker and more filling.
- You can make this a vegan blackberry strawberry smoothie by leaving out the yogurt and honey. Use your favorite nondairy yogurt and use maple syrup instead of honey.
Make Ahead Tips
Like most smoothies, this smoothie is best blended and served immediately. If you are meal planning, you can make this recipe, pour it into a mason jar and cover it. Place it in the refrigerator until you are ready to enjoy it. There will be some separation, so shake the smoothie before enjoying it.
This is a great smoothie to freeze too! You can freeze it in ice cube trays or as popsicles. Pour the smoothie into the vessel of choice and then freeze them for 2-3 months. They would be perfect as a delicious treat in the Summer!
Frequently Asked Questions
You can use a food processor, just be careful when pouring as a lot of the food processors don't have a spout. In a pinch, or when I am making a single smoothie, I will use an immersion blender too. Grab a plastic cup and use an immersion blender to blend the smoothie.
You can use either! Frozen fruit will make a really creamy smoothie but if you only have fresh fruit, use that!
Yes! You can double or triple this recipe for a crowd. Just make sure your blender is big enough to hold all the ingredients.
