Substitutions and Variations
- Protein. Add a scoop of your favorite protein powder to the ingredients in your high-powdered blender. If you aren't concerned with this being a completely vegan smoothie, add your favorite plain yogurt too. Nut butters are a great way to add protein too! Peanut butter, cashew butter, or almond butter are all great options!
- Change the milk. For this recipe, we are using unsweetened almond milk, coconut milk, oat milk, cashew milk, soy milk, or even whole milk. Whatever your favorite milk or plant-based milk is would work well in this recipe. To remove the milk completely, you can use orange juice, apple juice, or coconut water instead.
- Change the seeds. We are using chia seeds in this recipe, but flax seeds, hemp seeds, or your favorite seeds are great to add to the smoothie.
- Add more fresh fruit. For even more fruity goodness, add strawberries, raspberries, pineapple, or your favorite fruit.
- If you like green smoothies, add spinach or kale. Make sure you are using a high powdered blender because the spinach and kale really need to be blended well. No one wants chunks of leaves in your smoothie!
- Adds oats! To make this smoothie even more filling, make a blueberry oatmeal smoothie. Mix in ½ cup of oats and blend until a creamy texture forms.

Make Ahead Tips
Smoothies are best made and enjoyed immediately. To make it ahead of time, add all the ingredients to the blender and blend it until it's thick. Pour it into a mason jar or a container. Place it in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. It will separate in the refrigerator, but that's ok! Simply shake the smoothie in the jar and it will come back together. You can also pour it back into the blend and blend it with some ice.
