Nutella is an ingredient I ALWAYS have in my pantry. My kids LOVE Nutella. I have made everything from Nutella pancakes to Nutella zucchini bread to Nutella bars to Nutella chia seed pudding. When my daughter asked for a hot chocolate on a really hot day, I decided to try making it a milkshake and adding our favorite ingredient, NUTELLA!
What is Nutella exactly? It's a chocolatey, nutty spread that is perfect on toast or really on anything. It's made with hazelnuts, sweet, chocolatey, and absolutely perfect. If you haven't tried Nutella, you must try this milkshake!

What is a Frozen Hot Chocolate?
Frozen hot chocolate is a fun twist on the classic hot chocolate drink. You've got all the flavors of a hot chocolate, but it's blended with ice cream and instead of being enjoyed by the fire, it's enjoyed on a hot day! It's a great dessert or sweet treat on a Summer day.
To keep the integrity of the "hot chocolate" part of this recipe, we are going to use one packet of your favorite hot chocolate blend. More on that later!
Ingredients to Gather
- Ice cream. This is a frozen hot chocolate after all, so use chocolate ice cream! You can use vanilla if you don't want the flavor too chocolatey, but stick with chocolate if you can.
- Hot chocolate mix. You'll need just one packet of your favorite hot chocolate mix. If you don't use the packets, you can use ¼ cup of powdered or homemade hot chocolate mix.
- Nutella. Nutella is readily found in your local grocery store. It's so popular now, it's found near the peanut butter in your grocery store.
- Milk. This is going to help make the milkshake drinkable. You can use whole milk or 2% milk per milkshake.

Substitutions and Variations
- Make it an adult version! Add a splash of hazelnut liquor or chocolate liquor for an adult version of this creamy milkshake.
- Make it more chocolatey! You can add an extra scoop of chocolate ice cream or even some cocoa powder to make this milkshake even more chocolatey.
- Adjust the consistency! You can make this milkshake thicker by using less milk. To make it thinner and easier to drink, add some more milk.
- Add some mix ins! Some ingredients that go really well with Nutella are peanut butter and bananas. Feel free to add those into your milkshake too!
How To Make a Nutella Frozen Hot Chocolate
To the blender, add the ice cream. Open the packet of hot chocolate and sprinkle it over the top of the ice cream.
Add the Nutella to the blender. Add the milk to the blender and blend for 1-2 minutes or until the milkshake is the desired consistency. Serve with homemade whipped cream.
Tips and Tricks
- If your Nutella is too thick, you can microwave the Nutella for a few seconds to loosen it up.
- This recipe makes one large milkshake or two smaller milkshakes. You can easily double or triple this recipe to feed a crowd.
- If you don't have a high speed blender, you can make this milkshake with an immersion blender in a large container, or even in a food processor.
- For a thinner frozen hot chocolate, add a little more milk. For a thicker milkshake, add an extra scoop of ice cream.
Make Ahead Tips
All milkshakes are best served right after they are blended. If you do need to make this ahead of time, blend the milkshake and then place it in the refrigerator. When you are ready to enjoy it, place it back in the blender with some ice cubes and blend until the desired consistency is reached.
You can make this into popsicles too! Pour the milkshake into your favorite popsicle mold and freeze it for at least 4 hours. Then enjoy on a hot Summer day!
