This Matcha Milkshake Recipe is my favorite summer treat! Sweet and creamy with earthy, floral notes from the tea, it’s refreshing and so easy to make!
Try a shamrock milkshake, banana milkshake, and carrot cake milkshake, too!

Have you gotten on the matcha train yet? If not, hop on! I love a matcha latte in the morning with Nutella chia seed pudding, chocolate peanut butter chia seed pudding, or chia seed pudding with yogurt!
There’s just something about the sweet, umami flavor of the tea that always hits the spot. You know I love my coffee, but I love a matcha latte recently too!
So much so, that I often crave it throughout the day and decided to start infusing matcha powder into a variety of recipes like this matcha tea milkshake! It starts with a simple base similar to an old-fashioned vanilla milkshake or even my creamsicle milkshake.
Then, I add just a dash of matcha powder, and the flavor of this milkshake is out of this world! Every sip is sweet, creamy, and slightly vegetal in the best way.
Even better, you only need a few minutes, and your shake is ready to drink. It’s the perfect way to cool off on a hot day!

What is Matcha?
Matcha is basically super-powered green tea, it’s made from finely ground green tea leaves, so instead of steeping and tossing the leaves, you’re actually drinking the whole thing.
It’s bright green, kind of earthy tasting (some people say grassy, but in a good way), and gives you a calm, focused energy. If you like green tea, you'll love matcha and it is all the rage recently!
Ingredients to Make a Matcha Milkshake

- Vanilla Ice Cream. Use a high-quality vanilla ice cream for the base of the shake. You can use frozen yogurt if you prefer. If you want even more green tea flavor, use your favorite green tea ice cream if you can find it!
- Milk. Helps blend the ingredients. For the best taste and texture, use full-fat or whole milk.
- Matcha Green Tea Powder. Use a high-quality, ceremonial grade matcha powder for the best taste. I get mine right on Amazon. You can find all sorts of different brands and types of matcha.

Tips and Tricks
- Add more milk if needed, and be sure to stop and scrape the sides of the blender so that all the ingredients are evenly incorporated.
- Chill your glass for 10-15 minutes before serving to keep your milkshake nice and cold!
- Adjust the sweetness. If your matcha is on the bitter side, add a bit of maple syrup, honey, or granulated sugar for a sweeter taste.
- Need a dairy-free option? No problem! Swap the ice cream and milk for plant-based varieties. There are so many options in the store right now, you can find some great quality non dairy milk and ice cream options.
- If you don't have a high speed blender, you can use an immersion blender in a large container. Even a food processor will work, just be careful when you are pouring it out of the food processor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Like matcha lattes, this milkshake is slightly sweet with earthy undertones and a very subtle, grassy taste, in the best way!
There’s no need! It will mix into the milk as the blender runs.
I serve my milkshakes topped with whipped cream and sometimes add a marschino cherry. However, they’re also tasty with chocolate shaving, coconut flakes, fresh blueberries, strawberries, or a drizzle of honey.
