What is Chia Seed Pudding?
Chia seed pudding is super easy to make and incredibly good for you. Think overnight oats, but with chia seeds instead of oats. Essentially, it's just chia seeds soaked in liquid (like milk) until they swell up and create a pudding-like texture. It's a really great make ahead breakfast because the chia seeds need time to absorb the liquid.
You can enjoy puddings as a breakfast or an afternoon snack. It's filling, full of good for you ingredients, and super easy to make. I've been obsessed with them, and I think you will too!
Ingredients in Chocolate Peanut Butter Chia Seed Pudding
You only need a few simple ingredients to make this delicious chia seed pudding!
- Milk. Use your favorite milk. I like to use almond milk for chia seed puddings.
- Maple syrup. For a little extra sweetness.
- Chia seeds. You can buy chia seeds right in your local grocery store. They are usually in the baking section of your local grocery store.
- Cocoa powder. Unsweetened cocoa powder is great, but if you have sweetened that would work.
- Peanut butter. Use your favorite kind of peanut butter. I love using natural peanut butter, but any type of peanut butter will work.

Substitutions and Variations
- Milk: Use any milk you would like. Dairy milk, soy milk, coconut milk, or oat milk are all great options.
- Sweetener: Substitute maple syrup with honey, agave nectar, or any sweetener you like.
- Nut Butter: Swap peanut butter for almond butter, cashew butter, or sunflower seed butter if you have allergies or prefer a different type of nut butter. You can even use a powdered peanut butter. Use 2 tablespoons of powdered peanut butter in place of peanut butter.
- Cocoa Powder: For a richer chocolate flavor, use dark cocoa powder or melted chocolate.
- Add protein: You can add a scoop of your favorite protein powder or some Greek yogurt to boost the protein in your pudding.
How To Make Chocolate Peanut Butter Chia Seed Pudding
Step 1: In a large mixing bowl, mash the bananas. Add the peanut butter. Heat the peanut butter a little to thin it out to help mix in the peanut butter better.
Step 2: Add the cocoa powder and maple syrup. Mix well.

Step 3: Add the chia seeds and milk. Mix all the ingredients well.
Step 4: Portion the chia seed puddings into two airtight containers. Keep them in the refrigerator until you are ready to enjoy them.

Tips and Tricks
- Use a blender! If you like a smoother texture, blend the mixture before refrigerating it. This helps to break down the chia seeds and gives the pudding a creamier consistency.
- Adjust the sweetness! Feel free to adjust the amount of sweetener to your taste. You can add more maple syrup or honey if you prefer a sweeter pudding.
- Have fun with the toppings! Add your favorite toppings such as fresh berries, banana slices, granola, or a drizzle of extra peanut butter.
Make Ahead Tips
Once the chia seed puddings are portioned out, place the airtight containers in the refrigerator. Chia seed pudding needs at least 4 hours to set, but it's best to let it sit overnight. Once set, it will keep well in the fridge for up to 5 days.
When you're ready to eat the pudding, give it a good stir. The chia seeds might settle at the bottom, so a quick mix will help with the consistency.
If you like adding fresh fruit, nuts, or other toppings, it's best to add these right before serving. This way, they stay fresh and crunchy rather than getting soggy.
Frequently Asked Questions
If your pudding is too thick, simply add a little more milk and stir until you reach your desired consistency.
Definitely! Just make sure to thaw it in the refrigerator overnight before eating and then top it with your favorite toppings.
You don't have to soak them overnight, but at least 4 hours it best to get the chia seeds to turn into pudding texture.
