If you made me choose between chocolate and caramel, honestly I would choose chocolate every time. But I think caramel has it's place, and let me tell you, it's in this milkshake. I always have caramel sauce in my refrigerator because my kids love it. We add it to ice cream sundaes, drizzle it over popcorn, and of course, make milkshakes with it!
Caramel (Store-bought or homemade) adds so much sweetness and rich decadence to this milkshake, you won't be able to put it down! This milkshake tastes like a treat from your favorite diner, except much cheaper!
Homemade Caramel Sauce vs. Store Bought
If you make homemade caramel sauce, this is a great place to use it! For me, I like to buy it at the store. I can't tell you how many times I've tried to make caramel sauce and it ends up a burnt mess. If you are good at it and have a great recipe, use that! I always have a jar in the pantry or my refrigerator because we use it in so many different treats.
Ingredients to Make Caramel Milkshakes
- Caramel sauce. Your favorite store bought caramel sauce is great. The richer the better! For homemade caramel sauce, cook sugar until it’s golden brown, then add butter and cream.
- Vanilla ice cream. Like most milkshakes, we start with vanilla ice cream. It’s a great base for any milkshake. You could also try caramel ice cream for extra flavor.
- Milk. To thin out the milkshake a little and make it more drinkable. Use your favorite milk here. Nondairy or dairy would both work.

How To Make a Caramel Milkshake
Step 1: In a high-speed blender, add the caramel sauce, milk, and ice cream. Blend for 1-2 minutes or until the milkshake is creamy and smooth.
Step 2: Pour the milkshake into your favorite glass and top with homemade whipped cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce.
Lynn's Tip!
Warm up the caramel sauce slightly before adding it to the blender. It blends more easily and helps make the milkshake smoother.
Tips and Tricks
- This recipe makes two medium-sized milkshakes. You can easily double or triple it to feed a crowd. Just make sure you have a big enough blender to fit all the ingredients.
- To keep the milkshake colder, longer, chill the glass that you are serving the milkshake in. The more fun the glass and the straw, the more fun the milkshake! That's my thought process anyway!
- For a thicker milkshake, add an extra scoop of ice cream. For a thinner milkshake, add an extra splash of milk or caramel sauce.
Storage Instructions
Caramel milkshakes are best enjoyed right away while they’re thick and frosty. If they are kept in the refrigerator, they will separate and lose their texture.
You can actually freeze this recipe though! It makes great popsicles! Pour the milkshake into your favorite popsicle mold and freeze for at least 4 hours.
If you are going to freeze this caramel milkshake, pour it into a freezer-safe container. Freeze, and when you’re ready to enjoy it, place the frozen milkshake into a blender and add some milk. Blend until it's smooth and creamy.
