Can You Make a Milkshake Without Ice Cream?
Yes! It's actually super simple to do! All you need is milk, ice cubes, and whatever flavoring you would like. In this recipe, we are adding chocolatey Oreos. To give this milkshake it's creamy texture, we are also adding some heavy cream to make it super creamy and indulgent.
Ingredients to Gather
- Oreos. This is a cookies and cream type of milkshake, so we'll be using Oreos or your favorite Oreo like cookie. Use the regular sized Oreos, not the smaller ones.
- Heavy cream. Since we aren't using ice cream, the heavy cream gives the milkshake it's creamy, indulgent feel.
- Ice cubes. The ice cubes keep the milkshake cold and frozen.

Substitutions and Variations
- Make it vegan! Substitute dairy milk with your favorite non-dairy milk such as almond milk, soy milk, or coconut milk. Make sure to use vegan Oreos which you can easily find in the grocery store.
- Protein-packed Oreo milkshake. Add a scoop of your favorite protein powder to boost the protein content of your milkshake. Vanilla or chocolate flavored protein powder would work well with the Oreo flavor.
- Nutty Oreo milkshake: Blend in a tablespoon of peanut butter or almond butter for a nutty twist.
- Mint chocolate Oreo milkshake: Like the classic mint chocolate chip milkshake, make it a milkshake! Add a few drops of peppermint extract or a handful of fresh mint leaves to the blender for a refreshing minty flavor.
- Coffee Oreo milkshake: For coffee lovers, add a shot of espresso or a tablespoon of instant coffee powder (like in my coffee smoothie) to the blender for a caffeinated kick. The combination of coffee and chocolate is a match made in heaven.
- Spiked Oreo milkshake: For adults, add a splash of your favorite liquor such as Bailey's Irish Cream, Kahlua, or vodka for a fun twist! Just be sure to enjoy responsibly!

How to Make It Thick Without Ice Cream
The secret to a thick Oreo milkshake without ice cream is keeping everything as cold as possible and not going overboard on the milk. Here's what works best for me:
- Freeze your milk into ice cubes. Regular ice works, but it waters the shake down as it melts. Milk cubes keep it creamy and extra thick without diluting that Oreo flavor.
- Start with less milk. You can always add more, but you can't take it out. I start with just a splash and add a little at a time until it's the texture I want.
- Add more Oreos. The crushed cookies soak up liquid and thicken the shake naturally. Plus, more Oreos is never a bad thing!
- Try a spoonful of instant pudding mix. A tablespoon of vanilla or cookies and cream pudding mix thickens things up fast and makes it taste like it came from a diner.
- Toss in a frozen banana. If you don't mind a hint of banana, it adds a super creamy, almost soft serve texture.
- Blend in short bursts. Blending too long warms the shake up and thins it out, so pulse just until smooth.
Tips and Tricks
- If you have it on hand, add ice cream to this milkshake! You can easily add 1 cup of ice cream to this milkshake if you want a classic milkshake. Vanilla, chocolate, or cookies and cream are all great option.
- This makes great ice cream too! Pour the milkshake into your favorite popsicle mold or airtight container. Freeze for at least 4 hours and then enjoy on a hot Summer day or for an after dinner snack.
- Garnish this Oreo milkshake with whipped cream (homemade or store bought) and a few crushed Oreos for a decadent looking dessert.
