Made with only 4 ingredients, this Chocolate Banana Milkshake is the perfect blend of creamy banana and sweet chocolate syrup! You'll be making this milkshake again and again!
Serve this milkshake with homemade whipped cream!
I love the combination of chocolate and banana, how about you? To be honest, sometimes I take a banana and melt some chocolate chips on top. That is the perfect snack, in my opinion! Why not make that into a cold, icy milkshake? Plus it only has 4 ingredients. You could make this milkshake everyday if you wanted!
We always have bananas in the house. My kids see them in the grocery store and want a big bunch of those yellow beauties. Then we get them home and no one wants to touch them. Quickly they turn brown and spotty and then for sure no one will eat them! When that happens, I make this milkshake or my strawberry banana milkshake.
Ingredients to Gather
- Banana. You'll want one banana. If you have a brown and spotty banana on the counter, use that! You can also freeze bananas and then use one cup of frozen bananas.
- Milk. This helps make the milkshake more drinkable and not so thick.
- Vanilla ice cream. Might seem weird to use vanilla ice cream in a chocolate milkshake, but trust me, it's necessary. This is because the vanilla ice cream is kind of a base, and then we will add chocolate syrup to make it more chocolatey. If all you have is chocolate ice cream, use that and leave out the chocolate syrup.
- Chocolate syrup. Use your favorite variety. You could use unsweetened cocoa powder if you only have that in your kitchen.

Substitutions and Variations
- Peanut Butter Chocolate Banana Milkshake. Add a spoonful of peanut butter for a nutty twist.
- Mocha Banana Milkshake. Just like my coffee banana smoothie, coffee and banana is actually a delicious combo! Add a shot of espresso or some coffee powder for a coffee-chocolate blend.
- Nutella Banana Milkshake. Use Nutella instead of chocolate syrup for a rich, hazelnut-chocolate taste.
- Protein-Packed Chocolate Banana Milkshake. Add a scoop of chocolate or vanilla protein powder for an extra boost.
- Vegan Chocolate Banana Milkshake. Use almond or soy milk and dairy-free chocolate syrup for a vegan-friendly option. You can easily find some vegan ice cream in the grocery store to use too.
- Make it boozy! Add a splash of your favorite liquor to make this an adult treat. Make sure to make a batch for the kids that is nonalcoholic too!
How To Make a Chocolate Banana Milkshake
Add all the ingredients to a blender and blend for 1-2 minutes or until the desired consistency is reached. Serve with whipped cream, some more chocolate syrup, and a slice of bananas.
Tips and Tricks
- This recipe makes one large milkshake or two smaller milkshakes. You can easily double or triple this recipe if you have a blender that is large enough.
- To make the milkshake thinner, add some more milk. To make it thicker, add a handful of ice cubes or reduce the amount of milk to ¾ cup.
- If you have frozen bananas, frozen bananas will add to the creaminess of the milkshake. You can freeze bananas quickly by cutting the bananas and then freezing them for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Even though that isn't much time, it will make a difference in the milkshake.
Make Ahead Tips
Milkshakes are best mixed and then served immediately. They will melt and separate if you keep them in the refrigerator for too long.
You can freeze milkshakes though! You can freeze them in freezer safe containers, or in popsicle molds. This recipe makes really great popsicles! Pour the milkshake into your favorite popsicle mold and freeze for at least 4 hours.
