Pumpkin Puree vs. Pumpkin Pie Filling
When you're going through the grocery store, you might notice that there is pumpkin puree and pumpkin pie filling. Though it might seem like they are the same, they aren't.
Think of pumpkin puree and pumpkin pie filling as two sides of the pumpkin coin. Pumpkin puree is just that—pure pumpkin that's been cooked and mashed up. It's a blank canvas with no added spices or sweeteners, perfect for all sorts of recipes where you want to control the flavor yourself. That is exactly what we want in this milkshake.
Pumpkin pie filling, on the other hand, is like the all-in-one mix for making pumpkin pie. It’s already sweetened and spiced up with those yummy fall flavors like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Basically, it’s ready to go straight into a pie crust without any extra fuss. If you have that in your pantry, you can use that for this milkshake, just make sure to leave out the extra pumpkin pie spice or you'll be blown away by nutmeg and cinnamon!
Ingredients to Make Pumpkin Spice Milkshake
- Vanilla ice cream. Like most milkshakes, we need to start with vanilla ice cream. It's a great base for any milkshake. Caramel ice cream or even a pumpkin spice ice cream can be used instead.
- Pumpkin puree. Canned pumpkin or homemade pumpkin puree are great choices. Don't use canned pumpkin pie filling, but if that is all you have, leave out the pumpkin pie spice.
- Milk. Your favorite variety. Whole milk, 2% milk, or your favorite nondairy milk.
- Pumpkin pie spice. Your favorite variety. If you make your own homemade pumpkin pie spice, use that!
- Vanilla extract. For some extra flavors.
